Dental Implantology is the most rapidly expanding area of modern dentistry. Internationally it is not recognised as a specialty on its own as Implantology encompasses oral surgery, periodontology and prosthodontics. It is difficult and challenging for dental practitioners to find postgraduate training that offers them an appropriate level of education to enhance their skills in all these areas to support them. Industry run and managed courses vary considerably in quality and content and often jump from two days ’starter’ programs to overseas surgically focussed travel visits. What is needed is a balanced course covering all aspects; ideally working step by step with a clinician’s own patients. Ideally such a course should also enable a clinician to work in his own practice for the duration of the course.
A number of Australian Universities offer M.Clin.Dent. degrees and Grad. Dip. Diplomas in Dental Implantology. These universities are to be congratulated in offering comprehensive programs educating clinicians responsibly in all aspects of Dental Implantology to a good standard.
The JCU Graduate Diploma in Dental Implantology is rather different from the other programs. It has been running for three years and has proved to be very popular and successful. The program is designed to enable clinicians from all over Australia to access a comprehensive surgical and prosthodontic programme and also to integrate the course immediately into their everyday practice. The course comprises: symposia with international and national key opinion leaders, seminars, clinical diagnosis sessions and clinical blocks at JCU in Cairns. This truly blended learning experience demonstrates how education of the highest standard can be delivered efficiently and effectively on a national and even international basis.
