Landscape photography keeps Dr Quang Tran of Smile@Norwest in Baulkham Hills, NSW, on the move.
My passion, outside of work, is landscape photography and I’m not afraid to travel to get the shot. In 2011, I completed a big hike in New Zealand with my dentist friend Dr Sean Parsonage along the Milford track. We covered 56 kilometres over four days and I was the only person crazy enough to carry a full-size tripod and a serious camera. Everyone else was using those small point-and-shoot cameras.
“My parents gave me my first SLR camera when I was just a child and I did a photography course at that time. Then schooling, university and having a family took up all my time.
“Three years ago, while I was in Hong Kong, I purchased a Canon DSLR EOS 7D. I researched photography online, did a few courses and my passion for photography re-ignited. When time allows, I’m out on weekends searching for the perfect seascape, sunrise and landscape shot. I love it when I successfully capture the moment and the photo resonates with the viewer.
“While on holiday in the USA in 2013, I kept a photo journal and posted the images on my flickr page (www.flickr.com/photos/tranclan5/). The shots I took in Utah’s Monument Valley and at the Grand Canyon turned out really well. The rock formations are spectacular and the light was amazing, particularly at sunrise and sunset.
“I’m hoping to do some more travel soon. There are so many places I would love to photograph—Antarctica, Iceland, South Africa… Hopefully my wife will let me go!
“I’ve also been the photographer at a few weddings for family and friends. That’s nerve-wracking. The pressure is on to produce some wonderful photographs that these people will keep for a lifetime. Fortunately, the results were great, the bride and groom were happy and our friendship survived. ≤
