Coming soon to Sydney …

For the first time King’s College London Dental Institute, one of the leading providers of postgraduate dental education, will be offering face-to-face hands-on training in January 2012 for students based in Sydney, Australia. This training forms part of two of the Institute’s most popular blended learning programmes—the Aesthetic Dentistry MSc and Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics MClinDent. These programmes allow students to achieve a high quality master’s degree of relevance to everyday practice from a UK Russell Group Dental Institute, through primarily home- and work-based learning and teaching.

The Dental Institute has pioneered distance and blended learning in dentistry. Taught using a blended learning approach, these programmes are the perfect solution for students who need to stay at home or are unable to come to London to study, and further their learning and gain a higher qualification from the highly prestigious King’s College London.

The online content provides the educational framework, including clinical cases and videos, which are supported once a year by face-to-face hands-on training at a dental skills centre in London and selected locations around the world. Students have the benefit also of a clinical mentor and access to an extensive e-library and online tutorials.

Covering tooth preparation, composites, veneers, occlusion, splints, treatment planning, smile design, impressions and provisional restorations, the face-to-face hands-on training takes place in the first year of study as a fully integrated part of the King’s master’s degree programme. The teaching is provided by experienced teachers, supported by master’s postgraduates from the Dental Institute’s programmes with a teaching ratio of 1:7.

Professor Brian Millar leads the blended learning programmes at King’s College London Dental Institute. He said: “Our blended learning programmes are popular with busy dentists who want to train in advanced techniques to enhance their clinical skills while running a practice. Growth of more than 30 per cent over the past two years is a measure of the success and popularity of our programmes. Given that a growing number of Australian dentists are enrolled on our programmes it is timely and appropriate in 2012 to run the face-to-face component in Sydney. I very much hope to encourage new applicants for our two flagship programmes – Aesthetic Dentistry and Prosthodontics.”

Professor Nairn Wilson, Dean and Head of the Dental Institute, said: “The Dental Institute is delighted to be running face-to-face hands-on training in Sydney in January 2012 for its postgraduate blended learning students in Australasia and South East Asia. Having students from more than forty countries around the world registered on the Institute’s blended learning master’s programmes, adds greatly to the student experience and the international relevance of the degrees. The Institute looks forward to being in Sydney in January 2012.”

Benefits of blended learning include studying at a time and pace to suit and applying the new knowledge directly to clinical practice. Students can view course content 24/7, have access to the extensive King’s e-library, and can discuss cases with King’s staff involved in teaching the programmes.

On 18th May 2011 from 17:00-19:00 GMT, the Unit of Distance Learning at the Dental Institute will be holding an Online Open Evening. Places will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure your place, please email: [email protected].
