Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) has announced one of the AFL Women’s League’s brightest players as their 2019 Smile of the Year Ambassador.
Each year DHSV awards an influential member of the community the Smile of the Year and partners with them to combat poor oral health —Australia’s most prevalent condition.
This year Collingwood midfielder Brittany Bonnici was selected and will help DHSV to connect with youth to help improve their access to oral health services and information.
DHSV CEO, Dr Deborah Cole, said Brittany Bonnici was chosen for her passion for social justice and a commitment to healthy living.
“Brittany is a fantastic role model, especially for young people,” Dr Cole said.
“Not only is she a great example of health and fitness, but she also genuinely cares about helping others and making a difference.”
In addition to her role in the AFLW, Bonnici is studying social work, volunteers to tackle youth homelessness and works in disability support.
Bonnici said being chosen as DHSV’s Smile of the Year gave her a chance to highlight the importance of good oral health among young people and spread the message that mental and physical wellbeing plays an important role in this regard.
“This award will help me and DHSV to join forces to promote the importance of oral health with other young people,” Bonnici said.
“It’s great to be able to share the message with young people that staying active, eating a healthy and balanced diet, and taking care of your oral health can have such a positive impact on your life.
“Better oral health starts with three easy steps—eat well, drink well, and clean well.”
