Dentists are invited to take part in important research on screening for type 2 diabetes in a private oral healthcare setting.
The Melbourne Dental School, in collaboration with the Department of General Practice at The University of Melbourne and eviDent Foundation, is conducting an important study (iDENTify) that aims to investigate whether screening for type 2 diabetes in a private oral healthcare setting using the diabetes risk questionnaire (AUSDRISK) will help improve identification of asymptomatic individuals with undiagnosed diabetes or a risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, occurring in more than 85 per cent of people with diabetes and in Australia, diabetes is increasing at a faster rate than other chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
Despite this, in the oral healthcare setting little is known about the management of patients with diabetes, undiagnosed diabetes or those at risk of diabetes. What is known is early diagnosis and treatment of this disease is critical to improving health outcomes.
